Carbon Reduction


With support from the Enterprise Ireland Green Transition Fund, Wellola has strategically allocated resources to support key sustainability initiatives:


  • Carbon Calculation and Reporting: We've meticulously assessed and reported on our direct and indirect emissions, aligning with international standards and NHS CRP requirements.


  • Carbon Mitigation: Our strategies focus on reducing emissions from operational activities, paving the way for a more sustainable future.


  • Green Tendering Strategy: Our procurement process prioritizes environmentally responsible suppliers and sustainable products, aligning with NHS CRP objectives.



Net Zero Strategy


At Wellola, we understand that addressing climate change requires comprehensive and far-reaching efforts. As noted by climate experts,


Limiting global warming to 1.5°C would require rapid, far-reaching and unprecedented changes in all aspects of society... [including] transitions in energy, land, urban and infrastructure (including transport and buildings), and industrial systems.

With this in mind, we've crafted a comprehensive net zero strategy that includes both short-term and long-term goals for achieving carbon neutrality. Our approach leverages new technologies and sustainable practices to minimize our environmental impact and enhance operational efficiency.



Our Offset Partners: Eternal Flame Tanzania


Wellola’s commitment to sustainability is exemplified by our collaboration with Eternal Flame Worldwide. This initiative utilises Ecological Cook Bags made from 100% bio-waste material, sourced locally from hemp and coconut waste. 



The key impacts of this project include:


  • 32 Tonnes of CO2e Offset: By mitigating the use of wood-burning fires, the project has significantly reduced carbon emissions.


  • 24,000 Empowerment Hours: Providing substantial support for women, allowing them to spend more time on education, employment, and personal development.


  • Children's Health Support: Mitigating risks of blindness and child mortality by significantly reducing smoke exposure in communities.


  • Sustainable Community Development: Contributing to sustainable development and ecological regeneration, fostering healthier environments and stronger communities.



A Lesotho Perspective


Subsistence farming in Lesotho is challenging, made even more difficult by the changing climate, which results in airborne dust storms and soil-laden rivers. Farmers already struggle to put food on the table, and the traditional method of cooking exacerbates this issue. The norm involves hiking to cut and carry wood from dwindling forests, then harvesting and carrying water to cook food over a fire for three to four hours. This exhaustive process detracts from time that could be spent growing food. 


In Lesotho, where subsistence farming is challenging, our initiatives are making a profound impact:


  • Eco-Friendly Cook Bags: Designed and made locally, these bags use less water and fuel wood, saving significant time and energy for farmers.


  • Farming Lessons: By providing farming lessons, we're empowering communities to focus on food production and soil regeneration.
